The first few days
- Stay off freshly sealed or finished floors until the time I gave you. Socks before shoes, light traffic before heavy.
- Wait to put rugs back until the sealer or finish has fully cured. Rugs trap moisture and solvent.
- Use felt pads under furniture before sliding anything back into place.
- Don't wet mop for the first few days unless I told you otherwise.
Every day
- Dust mop or vacuum (hard-floor setting, no beater bar on stone). Desert grit is what scratches floors.
- Wipe spills right away, especially wine, coffee, citrus, soda and pet accidents.
- Squeegee or towel off stone showers.
Every week
- Damp mop with a pH-neutral cleaner made for stone (travertine, marble) or a neutral floor cleaner (tile, VCT).
- Shake out entry mats. Keep mats at every outside door.
- Wipe around pet bowls and sinks, where hard water leaves rings.
Never use on stone
- Vinegar, lemon or "natural" citrus cleaners
- Bleach, lime-scale or bathroom sprays that say "not for natural stone"
- Mop-and-shine products that leave a film
- Abrasive pads, powdered cleansers or steel wool
Check your sealer
A few times a year, put a few drops of water on a busy spot. If it beads, you're good. If the stone darkens quickly, it's time to reseal. More in how often to seal travertine.
Commercial VCT floors
- Dust mop daily and damp mop with a neutral cleaner.
- Burnish on the schedule we set, and keep entry mats clean.
- Call when traffic lanes look dull after burnishing. A scrub-and-recoat now pushes back the next full strip.
When to call
- New open holes in travertine
- Dull paths that cleaning doesn't fix
- Stains or etch marks
- Water soaking in instead of beading
