Frequently Asked Questions

The questions I get asked most, answered the way I'd answer them on the phone.

Questions & answers

What does travertine restoration include?

A deep clean, filling open holes with color-matched filler, diamond honing to remove scratches, traffic wear and hard-water haze, and sealing. Polishing to a satin or higher shine is optional.

How often should travertine be sealed in Las Vegas?

It depends on traffic and location. Many indoor floors go one to three years between seals. Showers, kitchens and pool decks usually need it sooner. A few drops of water tell you: if the stone darkens or soaks it up fast, it's time.

Should my travertine be honed or polished?

Most people here go honed or satin. It hides scratches and water spots better. Polished looks more formal but shows wear faster, especially with our hard water.

Why do new holes keep showing up in my travertine?

Travertine has natural voids all through it. As the surface wears, holes just below the surface open up. Refilling them is normal maintenance, not a sign something is wrong.

How long does a travertine job take?

Many residential jobs take one to two days depending on size and condition. I'll give you a timeline with the estimate.

How soon can I walk on the floor?

Usually lightly, in clean socks, within a few hours. Furniture and rugs need longer, sometimes a day or more. I'll give you exact timing for the products I use on your floor.

Do I need to move furniture?

Please clear small items, rugs and breakables. We'll talk about larger furniture during the estimate.

Is it safe for pets and kids?

Keep them out of the work area until the floor is dry and the sealer has cured. Tell me about anyone with sensitivities and I'll plan around it.

Is there a smell?

Some sealers have a mild odor while they go on that fades as they dry. Open windows help. If smell is a concern, tell me ahead of time.

What does strip and wax involve?

Removing the old floor finish down to the tile, rinsing and neutralizing, then laying down several thin coats of new finish. It's mainly for VCT and similar resilient commercial floors.

How often does a commercial floor need stripping?

Most do well with a full strip once or twice a year and burnishing or a scrub-and-recoat in between. Busy lobbies and clinics may need more.

Do you take small jobs?

Yes. One shower or one entryway is fine. I also handle large commercial floors.

How much will it cost?

It's priced per square foot after I see the floor, because condition changes everything. Estimates are free. My cost factors guide lists published local ranges if you want a ballpark.

What should I clean travertine with?

A pH-neutral cleaner made for stone and a soft mop. Skip vinegar, bleach, and anything acidic or abrasive. They etch and dull the surface.

Do you work after hours for businesses?

Yes. Commercial work can be scheduled for nights and weekends so you stay open.
