Gyms & Fitness Studios

Sweat, chalk, rubber and heavy foot traffic. Gym floors need their own plan.

Where I fit in a gym

Rubber workout flooring and turf aren't my area, and I won't pretend otherwise. Here's what I do handle in a fitness facility:

  • Lobby and hallway VCT, stripped, waxed and burnished. Strip and wax ยท Burnishing
  • Locker rooms and showers: tile and grout deep cleaning and sealing. This is where odor lives. Grout
  • Stone or tile front desks and entries. Stone
  • Sealed concrete in functional training areas or lobbies. Concrete

Locker rooms

Showers and locker rooms combine hard water, soap, body oils and moisture all day. Grout darkens, tile gets a film, and smells build up. A real deep clean and grout seal helps, and so does a maintenance schedule so it doesn't build back up.

Scheduling around 5 a.m. members

A lot of gyms are open early and late, some around the clock. I work in the overnight lull or on a planned closure, section by section, so members can still get to the locker room.

Studios

Yoga, Pilates, barre and dance studios often have wood or specialty flooring I'll leave to the specialists. But their lobbies, restrooms and changing rooms are often tile or VCT, which I can take care of.

Keep it going

A maintenance plan puts the burnishing and locker room deep cleans on a calendar, so they don't slip.
